How to Become a Concrete Finisher in Canada

Concrete finishers, also known as cement finishers or cement masons, place, level, and finish concrete on everything from flatwork and foundations to high-rise, precast, and decorative work. It is a skilled Red Seal trade, distinct from the general concrete labourer role, and the certified, decorative-and-precast end is where the skill and the pay concentrate. Here is the path from getting started to a certified journeyperson.

Understand the trade

Job Bank classifies this trade under NOC 73100, Concrete finishers. It is a dedicated, single-occupation code for the skilled finishing trade, and it is distinct from the general concrete labourer or helper role. If you finish concrete, this is your trade.

Apprentice, or challenge with experience

  • Register a concrete finisher apprenticeship with a concrete or construction contractor, combining on-the-job hours with technical training
  • Or, with enough documented trade experience, challenge the certification exam directly
  • Learn formwork, screeding, floating, edging, grooving, power-trowel work, and curing and sealing

Get certified (the Red Seal anchor)

Concrete finisher is a Red Seal trade, and certification is what employers look for.

  • Trade certification is a compulsory certificate of qualification in Quebec, and available but voluntary in most other provinces
  • Ontario offers a voluntary cement mason certification
  • Red Seal endorsement is available on passing the interprovincial exam, which enables mobility across Canada

Learn the finishing techniques

  • Flatwork, foundations, sidewalks, roads, patios, high-rise, and precast
  • Decorative finishes: stamped, exposed-aggregate, and polished
  • Forms and formwork, curing, sealing, and waterproofing
  • Grade and reinforcement checks, and running the power trowel and screed

Land your first role

Apply to concrete and cement contractors, precast manufacturers, and general construction firms. Emphasize any formwork, power-trowel, or decorative-finish experience, and be clear about your certification or your plan to earn it. The work is project-based, so crews often hire right away when a job lands. Set up a job alert on a board built for the trade so new openings reach you before they fill.
